The sound of gunshots everywhere. Army trucks moving in cacophonous madness. Heavy missiles splitting the air at devastating speeds, carrying devastation with their roar, and exploding into fiery fires on their landing. An army tank conveniently relocates to a tactical base, revolving its gun as if it was a spiders antennae. The gun mantlet ricochets and a what seems as a guided missile is fired from its chambers. Scores of army men, what are casually referred as soldiers rush to take positions, fighting with their lives, fighting for their lives.
Here, allow me to take you for a reality check, where you really don't have to believe me, rather, just care to reason with me. Because I'm not really perfect at it, rather just another fellow trying to make it through.
Soldiers live in anticipation of the war, ready for the war and in earnest for the command to finally go for war. Ever heard the songs they sing when they march? Me too, and those normally aren't soft lullabies for a bunch of babies headed for sleep. Now think of it, men have led many wars, fought many, ended many and started others on equal instances. But your life, you only got one shot of it. Its like being in a war, you have been fighting for a while now, you are worn out, torn. You probably seeking a relief, not just a normal thirst, but a deep voracity of some sort, success and peace within. Then you got only one in the chamber, and very aware of that. Now in front of you, stand two figures, the commander of your rival forces, the other a reflection of you, your past and trials, tribulations. What will you fire at? The ball is in your court pal, make your choices, and make them wisely.
Maybe, just as a guiding quote, in the verbatim words of a musical philosopher, one Marshall Mathers, "Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted. One moment. Would you capture it or just let it slip?"
Now roger that!
Dedicated to a brother, a friend and a true soldier in the walks of life and paths of war, a soldier of peace, love and a troop in the regiments of The Queens Royal Army, a fellow soldier in the walk of my life, and a water in my backpack, and more so a fan, and a fan of my works too. Peter Kb, this one is for u bruv!
They say life is like war, I'm remotely unacquainted to the reality of this maxim, having never really been involved with the latter. What I can comfortably attest to is the fact that, in this life, everyone is a soldier of some sort, and how they prepare for their endeavours may as well determine whether it will be champagne showers at the end of it, or downright remorse and the bitterness of defeat.
1. Drop down and give me fifty!
Military physical training improves combat. If you ask me, soldiers literally spend most of their time training than in the actual phase of war. Preparation, they say, is key. The lack of which can be detrimental, and even carrying an untrained and unfit crew can be tantamount to jeopardy. Mind you, even reconnaissance is considered part of preparation, strategically undertaken to relieve doubt. The same way life demands, that you must be fit for it, by holding on to faith and exercising mental strengths. More of not just keeping your eyes on the prize, but also setting your character and personality prepared for the prize. Or it might as well be like leading a blind attack on your enemy's base. Do not just follow paths yet you don't know where they lead to. Do not carry ammo u can't operate, it will just slow you down. Similarly, do not carry booze and food with you during the war, save that for celebration time, which normally does come at the end of the wars. And if you feel that you still aren't ready for it, keep off the battlegrounds. They are brutal and unforgiving.
2. Situation Normal: All Fucked Up.
A real soldier is aware that every situation is normal, and that survival is never really a mirage, but a reality that should be maintained as so by all means possible. Retreat may always be an option, but giving up never is, and the real essence of retreat is for recollection and creation of new strategies. That is why in life, success lies in falling, rising and dusting your pants, and moving on with the war, because even a fucked up situation should be regarded and approached with a twinge of normalcy. Same way soldiers are punished for giving up on their generals' orders, same way life retributes those who give up on its terrains. Approach every instance with expectations, no matter how unexpectedly you found yourself in it. You never turn your rifle to yourself, keep the barrels facing you enemy. That's what they were designed for, unless you have 'coward' tagged on your brain.
3. Sticks and stones may not break my bones, but this fucking heat will kill me!
So it seems you already got yourself prepared for the war of your life, and you are cut out to face the edges of obliteration, time to pick up your guns and move. You probably got enough ammo in your backpack, and the rival army is really beginning to hate you because you are killing them flies. Your gun breathes fire, and fires off, taking away life with its breathe. You are the big kahuna by all standards, because you mastered your game. But then, suddenly there is an urge, thirst. The heat is killing you, you need a couple of gulps. Oops, did you forget to carry something big man?
A soldier knows his water. Because even when they have nothing else to hold on to, the water bottle will always spur some relief. This is certainly an important component, so much so that even after rescuing hostages from a mall terror situation, you had better keep your water with you.
Keep close things you cherish. Family, your love, your friends, because they are like jars of replenishing waters, and when the sun gets scorching hot, they are the only fans to cool down the heat. The roads may be bumpy, but your water will never really reduce with the bumps, probably just wobbling in a bottle somewhere in your backpack waiting for you to thirst and seek relief.
4. We are soldiers.
Real soldiers never take it for granted that they are fighting alongside fellow soldiers. The few of those who do, do not really remain part of the parts of the war for long, and vis a vis, loosing their soldier status. Because in this life, so as the wars, when a soldier falls down, you have to pick him up. Probably there may not exist a duty, just an incentive, bearing in mind that you are not sure about your tomorrow, and the person you are picking up today may be the same person who picks you up tomorrow. Remember, even fallen soldiers, pun intended, are remembered, and deeply revered for that matter. We fight in the success of those who fight alongside us. Wish everyone good, and do not be consumed in your own intent to extents of forgetting that we are soldiers!
