“What do you mean you are not coming on
Saturday?”
“Uhm, I’m a little held up this weekend in fact I have a few errands to run on Saturday, and I’ll probably be so tired I can’t possibly travel all the way.”
“But… but you promised!”
“No! In fact I thought we agreed you are
the one who’s coming over to Nairobi for the weekend!”
“When did we ever agree on that?”
For
a minute I think she forgets that screenshots exist in this new world, but I
have learnt to live with her like this, so I only go silent on the phone.
Silent. Then a loud sigh…
“So what will you be up to on Saturday?
Since it’s your birthday?”
I
can easily tell she is getting agitated. Time to tread carefully…
“I’ll probably hook up with my pal in
town, then my former school mates from primary school were organizing this
reunion on the same day, so I’ll pass by and then just go home later on.
Nothing much, I don’t feel like so much in sync with the whole Saturday effect.”
I laugh, quite fixedly, you know like I
said, treading carefully. “I guess I’m growing old…” Then that laughter, again…
“Well,” She is laughing as well. I heave a sigh of relief… “I wrote you
some epigram, you’ll probably love it. No in fact I know you’ll love it, just
the way you love everything about me, now I guess then I’ll email it… or do you
want it via your whatsapp? You know, it’s your birthday anyway, so maybe we can
just do things the way you want them done?”
Damn…
“I thought you have never really loved
surprises!” Laughter. She is ever so
lively, the problem with people like this; you never really know when they are
mad. “I had enough surprises back here for you but nilikuwa nikipanga juu I
though ulikuwa unakuja on Saturday.”
“Seems I’ll really miss out big time…”
“How many cigarettes have you smoked
today?”
“Where did that even come from missus?”
“I thought we were meant to quit you
smoking by your 24th Birthday! So I’m checking on the progress. How
many have you smoked today?”
I’m
counting…
So, I couldn’t wait to make that call
once I got here.
“Babe, niko hapa Nakumatt. Uko kambi
ama? Naskia njaa. Sijui nifike Lion’s Court nidishi if at all bado uko busy
kidogo? Eeh? Yeah, si hiyo Nakumatt. Ati nafanya nini uku? Saa hiyo ni swali
gani? Tsk. Na sasa tena mbona unascream? Babe, mbona unascream???” I can
certainly pull that serious tone in the midst of a surprise of this caliber,
need I say? She was thrown in to a state of imbroglio… Lol
How about SURPRISING HER ON MY OWN
BIRTHDAY?!
In the same spirit, I’d like to wish a
happy Birthday to my Twinnie Tabby Njoroge, a Happy Belated Birthday to my
other twin Rita. In the same breath, Happy Birthday to Scott Brown, Jennifer
Hudson, 2 Chainz, (I already got what he
has always wanted for his birthday) Jua Cali, and in memory of Paul Walker
and Barry White. Happy belated Birthday to Vivian Cheruiyot, and as they wait,
Happy Birthday to Moses Wetangula and Edna Kiplagat, enjoy your days.
